On Jacob de Zoet you can find all my reading notes since 2007. Initially, I wrote them just for myself, but since December 2012 I decided to publish them on this website. Who am I? I am a 33 year old Dutchman from Amsterdam and I work in a publishing house in Haarlem. Always interested in books and language I studied English at Amsterdam University. This is where my passion for literature started. At first only for English literature, but in recent years my horizon has widened. I now prefer to choose from a variety of genres – history, travel, science, philosophy – and writers. A recent interest is Eastern Europe: writers from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and especially Romania. As a special feature, all books by Romanian authors or relating to Romania are also translated into Romanian (see Tradus în Română).
Writing my articles I alternate between English and Dutch, depending on which language I’ve read a book in. Always looking for inspiration I’m open to recommendations from others – nothing better than reading someone’s personal favourites – so if you have any suggestions or comments on my articles I’d very much like to hear them. In return, I hope some of my recommendations will inspire you.
Jacob de Zoet is named after my favourite book The thousand autumns of Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell (see article). I chose this name because I like the sound of it (literally meaning ‘Jacob the Sweet’) and for the book’s connection with Dutch history.
